Case Study: Big Buckhead Hunting Club 2024-2025

Before being introduced to the public, Pin/Out was field-tested by Big Buckhead Hunting Club. BBHC is a fairly large club; as of June 2025 it has 39 members and 15 tracts of land.

The club adopted Pin/Out beginning in September 2024 with the start of deer season. After almost a year of use, we decided to take a look at the data. Figures given are for the period from September 14, 2024 to May 15, 2025.

Estimates Explained

Since there are a number of variables that influence the cost of hunting, we had to make some estimates to calculate total savings of time, money, and gas. We tried to be fair and conservative in our assumptions:

Fuel Economy

We're using 23 miles per gallon as the approximate fuel economy for hunting trips.

Distance and Time Traveled

The majority of BBHC's most-hunted properties are 6-10 miles from the clubhouse. We used 6.1 miles (the distance to one of the most popular tracts) as the average distance to a property, and 11 minutes (Google Maps' approximation) as the travel time.

We used double this distance and time (12.2 miles and 22 minutes) per pin in our estimates. In actuality, 3-4 times this distance and time may be appropriate, since hunters frequently have to travel to the clubhouse to place a pin, back to the property to hunt, back to the clubhouse to remove the pin, and then back home.

Gas Prices

We used $2.92 per gallon, which was the average price of gas in Georgia at the time of calculations.

Valid Pins

For a pin to be considered valid, it had to be placed for over an hour. This was done to ensure that pins that were placed and then quickly removed without being hunted weren't included in calculations.

Per-Member Metrics

Throughout the 2024-2025 hunting season, 38 different members placed pins, so we used this as the denominator when estimating per-member savings.

Results

From September 14, 2024 to May 15, 2025, Big Buckhead Hunting Club members collectively placed 693 valid pins. Using the approximates detailed above, this gives us the following savings:

  • $1,073.37 in gas money
  • 254.1 hours
  • 8,454.6 miles traveled
  • 367.6 gallons of gas

Extrapolated to per-member savings, that's:

  • $28.25 in gas money
  • 6.69 hours
  • 222.48 miles traveled
  • 9.67 gallons of gas
